Prudential RideLondon 100

Did you miss out on the ballot? If so,and you want to ride, see letter below received from Sense, the National Deafblind charity.

I work in the Events team at Sense, the National Deafblind charity, and I wanted to get in touch as we have guaranteed places available on our team for Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 on Sunday 2nd August and we’d love for the members of West Surrey CTC to get involved.

No doubt you are already aware of this event, which takes riders 100 miles on closed roads through central London and into the beautiful Surrey countryside, tackling the iconic Leith Hill and Box Hill along the way. It’s hugely popular and is always over-subscribed; this year around 25,000 riders are expected the cross the line.

We appreciate that riding for a charity and fundraising can sometimes be a sticking point, particularly among club riders who frequently miss out on places via the public ballot. Therefore, we have carefully calculated the costs involved and have managed to bring our general sponsorship target down to £489.

For the members of West Surrey CTC we are happy to bring this down even further to just £450!

To secure your place, you just need to visit our website and pay a registration fee of £20 (referencing your club name on the application form).

We hope you will be able to get involved. If you or any members of your club have any questions regarding the above, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch on events@sense.org.uk or on 0300 330 9257.

With very best wishes
Lydia

The Bicycle Icycle 2015

The ride took place on 15 March, starting at 09.30 although everyone was enjoying their tea and biscuits so much they actually didn’t leave the warmth of my new conservatory until 09.45. This disappointing level of enthusiasm for getting out into the fresh air wasn’t helped by the weather being significantly more dismal than on previous days: a very fine drizzle had started falling and it was decidedly un-warm.

Nevertheless, the following West Surrey folk set off: Martin & Heidi Vinson, Peter Hackman, Chris Jeggo, Julian Allen, Pat Daffern and Clive Richardson (7 riders). This year I didn’t join the ride sadly since I was getting over a cough and cold – a feeble excuse, I know.

The first rider back was Chris who admitted to taking a couple of shortcuts, so he’ll not be getting his points. The others rolled in not much later in a single group, at a little after 2pm, with Pat bringing up the rear a few minutes later. More refreshments were enjoyed before the group headed homeward.

I suppose, considering the weather, a turnout of seven is reasonable – the same number turned out last year and it was a much better day. The G&G Wayfarers were out for a half day ride at the same time but probably didn’t fancy a ride quite this long and hard. There were no riders from other local groups from further afield this time which was probably as a result of us not submitting this, or any of our other ‘flagship’ events up on the CTC’s main website or registering them as Touring Competition events. These errors have now been corrected. Our Audax events do get advertised better on the AUK website but for Touring Competition rides, we have to do the work ourselves. Perhaps next year we should attempt to do some additional promotion of our major events.

Tomorrow’s ride – press coverage

I have been advised that the Surrey Advertiser are planning to publish an article on John Weatherburn’s ride across America, and intend to send a photographer to the start of our ride tomorrow, to show John riding with our group.  I have agreed to this, it will be a great  opportunity to publicise the ride, or more specifically the fact that he will be raising money, for very personal reasons, for Cancer Research UK.   Our wish must be that this “goes viral” (I think that is the phrase!) and John can then get support from far and wide.
The photo shoot will also be an opportunity, perhaps, to publicise our Club, so I think it would be a good idea for as many of us as possible to wear club jerseys, even if we cover up again later if it is too cold; those who do wear club jerseys can feature at the front of any pictures, which might be an incentive (or not, depending on how you feel!).
It will naturally take time for photos to be taken, so if you can turn up promptly, that would be great.  I look forward to seeing you tomorrow.
