Woking Midweek Wayfarers Ride ~ 15 March 2017

After a spate of bad weather Wednesdays, here at last was some real spring weather. Spring flowers, sunshine and warmth! Our 55 mile ride (2,300ft of climbing), planned and led by Bob(by), took us from Pirbright to Farnborough – Church Crookham (coffee) – Odiham – Froyle – Binstead – Churt (lunch) – Tilford (ice creams!) – Runfold and back to Pirbright.

Here are a few shots from the ride.

Lunch was taken in the garden of the Crossways pub in Churt and the next photo gives an indication as to the state of the weather!

And to finish, a couple of group shots from the ride:

And finally, the ice cream team – not entirely sure why yours truly is enshrouded in a haze…

Thanks, Bob, for a really excellent ride and route!

Christmas Lunch Rides

This weekend’s events

I hope you are all now well prepared for a strenuous weekend.

On Saturday it is the Phil Hampton Memorial Ride, organised by North Hampshire CTC, starting in Medstead at 10am.  Phil lived in Farnborough, was a keen member of Audax UK, and often rode with us, being a key member of the WSDA team that was highly placed in the CTC’s DAs’ Touring Competition:  9th in 1989, 2nd in 1990 and winners in 1991-3.  Sadly, Phil was killed in 2002 by a lorry driver who was under the influence of drugs.  The entry fee for this ride in his memory is a donation of at least £5 to the Cyclists’ Defence Fund.  There is a choice of routes, 30 or 50 miles, see http://nhampshirectc.org.uk/phil-hampton-memorial-ride/.  I am planning to do the 50, which ranges over the scenic Hampshire lanes to the south, out to Bishops Waltham and Hambledon.  A treat!

On Sunday we have our own ‘Bicycle Icycle’, starting from Mark’s house in Godalming at 9.30.  Slightly shorter, but a bit more climbing.  Details from our events page:  http://westsurreyctc.co.uk/rides-and-events/cycling-events/.  Two treats in a single weekend.  Wow!

River Wey towpath

Nigel Burke from Guildford  Bike User Group (G-BUG) has recently taken over as Cycling UK’s representative on the National Trust River Wey User Forum and there is a meeting this Wednesday.

If you have any issues you would like to raise with regard to cycling on the towpath, please email him at n.burke@ntlworld.com

Come and Try a Time Trial

Have you ever wanted to try a time trial but felt a bit intimidated, or are you a triathlete looking to improve your bike split?

Cranleigh Cycling Club are running a ‘Come and Try It’ 10mile Time Trial on Sunday 9th April.
Open to all, it’s a relaxed & friendly affair, perfect for anyone who fancies giving a Time Trial a go.

When:  Sunday 9th April, first rider at 8:30am

Where: Course G10/44, 10 miles on local quiet roads with marshals, from Kirdford to Wisborough Green via Petworth.

HQ:  Plaistow Village Hall

A ‘Come and Try It’ event is a means of enabling newcomers to try time time trials without some of the usual restrictions: e.g. riders do not have to be members of an affiliated club, they can ride in any type of clothing (helmet required), or on any type of roadworthy bike.

£5 per rider: please book in advance by emailing Andrew Tell:
