… what this is?  Photographed at an altitude of about 1300m overlooking the Grand Canyon du Verdon, Provence, France in mid-September.

  1. Could it be the caterpillars responsible for this scene http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b019clbq
    from Nature’s Weirdest Events?

  2. Looks like the nest of the Pine Processionary Moth.

    Don’t touch!

    See http://www.anglophone-direct.com/Pine-Processionary-caterpillars and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pine_Processionary

  3. Possibly a web spun by the Pine Processionary Moth
(Information supplied by my daughter in law )
The adult moth only lives for a day!

  4. We saw lots of these on the mountain stretches of the CTC tour in Albania this year. I took a similar photo. Some trees were affected, some were not. There was a rumour that it was a type of spiders’ web.
