Tour of the Hills Sunday 20th August – volunteer to marshal

The Tour of the Hills is the Club’s major event and requires a large amount of support to enable it to take place, including volunteer marshals.  Marshalling is not an onerous job, but an essential one, as well as being very rewarding; competitors in the past have been full of appreciation for the work of the marshals.   The event is now only 4 weeks away, on Sunday 20th August, so please volunteer now by contacting me at johnmatsouthview@btinternet.com.  Those first to respond will have the best chance of getting their preferred marshal post and time slot (early – 10.15 onwards, late 12.30 onwards), so please let me know your preference when responding.  Whenever you assist, please make sure that you visit Shere Village Hall and tuck into the superb food provided by other club volunteers, for both you and the competitors.
It is worth mentioning that the Tour of the Hills, although having a deliberately low entry fee, enables the Club to remain solvent and help pay for such universal club benefits as ICE (in case of emergency) cards, subsidies on club clothing, and first aid training.  It is therefore so appropriate that it is supported widely by club members.
Thank you for your support.

ROLY MASSET MEMORIAL RIDE

Sunday 13th August, 9am Guildfordians Clubhouse

Charlotteville Cycling Club are organising a ride in memory of Roly Masset, who died earlier this year. Details are:

Anyone who had the pleasure of meeting Roly will know he was a gentleman, club stalwart, all round good guy and an ambassador for cycling over many decades.

In honour of his life I am proposing a ride, open to all, meandering through the lanes of Surrey and West Sussex. Lunch will kindly be provided by Derek and Mary who have generously opened their home to us for the event.

After suitable relaxation and refuelling, we will return over the Weald and Downs to Guildford.

For those who wish to join the ride for a shorter distance, mainline train stations are available at the halfway point, Havant or Rowlands Castle, and at various points along the return route.

I have provisionally mapped a route of approx 89 miles in total but will not be posting a gpx file, it’s truer I feel to Rolys ethos of riding if we use local knowledge and common sense rather than staring at a screen!

Guildfordians Clubhouse is the rugby/sports pavillion at the north of Stoke Park, limited parking is available on site, additional parking is available at the Spectrum.

Route as planned runs Guildford-Shalford-Bramley-Hascombe-Dunsfold-Chiddingfold-Lickfold-Midhurst coffee stop Bepton-East Harting-West Marden-Hambrook lunch, return route will follow mainline railway line east of A3 as close as possible including Petersfield, Liphook, Haslemere probably another coffee stop somewhere and finish back in Guildford.

If you do intend to ride, could I ask you to contact me batch_78@hotmail.com so I can provide an idea of numbers for catering.

Children's Trust Image

Help children with brain injury by taking on the climbs of the Pilgrim’s Way in The Children’s Trust London to Canterbury Cycle Challenge on Sunday 10th September 2017! Described as “one of the best charity rides in the calendar”, the ride gives even the most seasoned of cyclists a thrill with over 1500 metres of climb between its start in London’s Kidbrooke and finish in Canterbury, Kent.

Hot and cold breakfasts will be available to purchase at the start line in Kidbrooke, London, before riders are given a staggered start between 8 and 9am. Choose from a challenging 65 or 80 mile route, both fully signed and marshalled throughout. Riders will enjoy regular and well stocked feed stations.

Cyclists can complete the challenge safe in the knowledge that help is always at hand from support and recovery vehicles, mobile mechanics, and first aid, all of whom will be patrolling the ride throughout the day.

Panoramic views over Canterbury Cathedral await all finishers, as well as a medal of achievement. Cyclists are then invited to enjoy a complimentary sports massage, and can look forward to a BBQ, music, and stands & stalls. Friends and family are encouraged to cheer their cycling stars through the finish line.

A coach will be available to transport cyclists and their bikes from Canterbury to the start line in Kidbrooke, London on the morning of the event. Places on the coach are available to book via our website or over the phone.

One rider commented; “Having done the ride five times before, I think that speaks for itself. I’ll be back next year.”

Cyclists will be provided with route maps, training plans (if required), a Children’s Trust fundraising pack, and GPX and TCX files will also be available on signing up.

Single and discounted team entries available & riders are asked to raise a minimum of just £1 per mile cycled to help children with brain injury. To secure your place in our London to Canterbury Cycle Challenge 2017, simply visit The Children’s Trust website at https://www.thechildrenstrust.org.uk/ltc or give us a call on 01737 364323. IOW ride 12 July 2017

Here are a few pics of the G3 ride on the Isle of Wight, courtesy of Alan Mayger – a bit grey to start with but soon gave way to a beautiful sunny day. Excellent lunch at the Crown pub at Shorwell, enlivened by the sight of huge fish fighting over bread with the ducks!
