Tour of the Hills and Tour of the Greensand

The club’s most legendary event enjoyed fine, mild weather conditions – just! The rain started at around 7pm, by which time almost everyone – even those who cycled to and from the event – had reached home. Hard luck, Julie and Roland, but well done for riding to the start, taking some photos when on the ride, completing the ride almost within the time limit, and then riding home: true cycling heroes! And well done to all 103 finishers because it’s a tough ride by any standard, as was proved by the 25 who didn’t manage to finish. And as for the 24 who didn’t start, thanks for your entry anyway – we won’t waste your entry money on anything trivial. This year the Tour of the Hills was one of Cycling UK’s chosen events in their ‘Challenge Ride’ series. As such, every rider received a medal, a musette and

SADR Ride on 26 March 2017

This was a right old ‘suffer-fest’ for me: I mean, 89 miles and it’s still only March, not to mention only my third ride of the year! Paddy and Chris – sorry no photos – sensibly headed home after coffee, but that would still have been about 60 miles. Good to see Dane at coffee too, which was at a café in Alresford. We – that is Clive, Dave, Keith and yours truly then headed south east to cross the South Downs bound for lunch at Rowlands Castle. Clive deserves a medal for ensuring that the journey home – he peeled off at Liphook of course – was as flat as it could be, and to Dave and Keith for their excellent company; if it wasn’t for them I think I’d still be lying in a ditch somewhere along the way. There’s no doubt it was a lovely ride, and

The Bicycle Icycle 2017

West Surrey’s first event of the year took place on 19 March in mild, cloudy conditions. The roads were dry for a change and the turnout was excellent – 18 people, including two guests. The riders were: Angela Byrne, Marion and Nick Davison, Julian Allen, Chris Boggon, Clive Richardson, Chris Jeggo, Peter Hackman, Martin and Heidi Vinson, Bob McLeod, Chris Juden, Matt Carolan, Dave King, Paul Taylor and Mark Waters. Chris Wright (Alton CTC) and Andrew Grundy (East Surrey CTC) were guest riders. The Bicycle Icycle, which as mentioned above did not live up to its name thankfully, is a lumpy ride – 3,535ft of climbing in 42.5 miles. For those who rode the Phil Hampton Memorial Ride the previous day, it must have been especially challenging: hero of the day must surely be young Bobby McLeod who rode both in fine style; a couple of others found it all

Woking Midweek Wayfarers Ride ~ 15 March 2017

After a spate of bad weather Wednesdays, here at last was some real spring weather. Spring flowers, sunshine and warmth! Our 55 mile ride (2,300ft of climbing), planned and led by Bob(by), took us from Pirbright to Farnborough – Church Crookham (coffee) – Odiham – Froyle – Binstead – Churt (lunch) – Tilford (ice creams!) – Runfold and back to Pirbright. Here are a few shots from the ride. Lunch was taken in the garden of the Crossways pub in Churt and the next photo gives an indication as to the state of the weather! And to finish, a couple of group shots from the ride: And finally, the ice cream team – not entirely sure why yours truly is enshrouded in a haze… Thanks, Bob, for a really excellent ride and route!

Christmas Lunch Rides

A happy group

Cast your mind back several months and recall those lovely meals you enjoyed with your cycling pals. Here are a few reminders. Firstly there was the Sunday All Day Riders’ annual Christmas lunch at the Blue Ship. And then there was the Guildford and Godalming Wayfarers’ Christmas lunch at the Parrott….

WMW Ride to Walbury Hill ~ 19 October 2016

This was a great ride, planned by Phil, which started and finished at Micheldever. It was great to cycle outside of our usual area, particularly when the route was so good….. and so quiet! There was very little traffic and what a pleasure that was! Below are some photos including one in the churchyard of St Peter’s parish church in St Mary Bourne; we stopped there for a moment to focus our thoughts for a few moments on Ron Richardson, whose funeral was today. We were a large group of 18 people for some of the ride. A couple of our number got stuck for well over an hour in a jam on the M3, following an accident, on their way to the start of the ride, so they didn’t join us till later on the ride. Other than that, the day went smoothly enough and in fine cycling conditions.

WMW Annual Thames Towpath Ride 2016

For those of us who enjoy the annual hot, dusty trundle (at speed) down the Thames, today did not disappoint: it was indeed hot and dusty…. but oh such fun! It really is a ride with a difference and it was a joy to see us all heading off with a minimum of organisation and a maximum of anticipation of a good day in good company. Mountain bikes had, in most cases, been pulled out from the back of the bike pile, checked, oiled slightly and were ready to rock and roll. Before heading off from the car park of the Black Prince in Woodham – a mere few hundred yards from the start of our canalian progress – John very sensibly reminded us of the occasion when there had been a minor ‘towpath fracas’, the consequence being that one of our number found himself in the water, complete with

Tour of the Hills 2016

Here are a few photos taken inside and outside the hall during the Tour of the Hills 115km audax, which took place yesterday, 21st August. It would be good to receive a report on the ride from someone who rode it. From the point of view of this scribe, who worked on the catering side, it was a great day with no accidents and lots of seemingly happy riders (once they had completed the ride – they looked a little apprehensive before the ride!). Everyone looked like they enjoyed the eats which always brings a smile to any caterer. Well done, all, for turning a great event into a great occasion!

Sunday All-Day Riders ~ 14 August Ride

Some fabulous August weather saw a small group of us heading out to Lasham aerodrome for coffee, followed by lunch at The Good Life at Headbourne Worthy, near Winchester, and we even enjoyed yet more cake on the way home at Selbourne. Is there really a better way to spend a mid-summer Sunday! https://www.strava.com/activities/677795716
